SP250 Owners Club at The ‘Practical Classics’ Classic Car & Restoration Show
Since its inauguration the SP250 Owners Club has been supporting this show which this year took place over the weekend 23rd-25th March. Now in its 5th year the show has grown significantly from the first year when just 30 car clubs took part to this year when there were over 150 clubs attending.
The show brings together all aspects of the classic car community from rusty ‘barn finds’ that are virtually beyond help to quality Concours exhibits. There were live demonstrations and workings showcasing what it takes to restore, keeping, and maintaining classics in good order.
Classic Car Auctions over two days held an auction of no less than some 160 cars. Interest was high with very few lots remaining unsold. Among the array of traditional British and Continental classics there were some unusual lots – a Statesman Limousine, Lamborghini Tractor and even a London Taxi. Prices attained were good and the cars that seemed to be showing the best growth were Fords and Jaguars especially the XJS.
One of the more interesting cars displayed as a ‘Barn Find’ was a 1964 Moskvich 403 dressed in the livery of a Soviet police car once owned by Pinewood Studios and was used in the remake of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.
With Laurence Jones’s expertise everything seemed to be going smoothly until a week before the Show. The Organisers wanted to move our stand from its original position. The stand was now going to be larger meaning we needed an extra car – three cars instead of two. Not so easy at such short notice. This meant more form filling, extra carpet which had already been ordered, and hunting for another car. With three days to go one of the original exhibitors said he couldn’t make it either. Again Laurence’s search was on and he didn’t disappoint and found a second new volunteer.
Our grateful thanks go to Graham Watkins and James Davis for volunteering their services at such short notice and Paul Castaldini as the original exhibitor. Thanks also go to all those who helped to man the stand over the three days.
The next big indoor show at the NEC is over the weekend of November 9th/10th/11th. If any SP owner would like to exhibit who hasn’t exhibited before please contact me on 01895 832145.
